PERIODINTAL

aftercare

Aftercare following periodontal treatment is crucial for promoting healing and maintaining oral health:

Follow Post-Operative Instructions

Your periodontist will provide specific instructions for caring for your gums and teeth after treatment. Following these instructions carefully is essential to promote proper healing and minimise discomfort.

Take Prescribed Medications

If your periodontist has prescribed any medications, such as antibiotics or pain relievers, be sure to take them as directed. This helps prevent infection and manage any post-operative pain or discomfort.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Continue to brush your teeth gently twice a day and floss daily, taking care to avoid the treated areas until your periodontist advises otherwise. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid irritating the gums.

Use Warm Saltwater Rinse

Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater several times a day, starting the day after treatment. This helps reduce inflammation and promote healing. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around in your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications. If you smoke, try to refrain from smoking for at least 24 to 48 hours after periodontal treatment, or longer if possible.

Watch for Signs of Complications

Keep an eye out for any signs of complications, such as excessive bleeding, swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection (e.g., pus, fever). If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your periodontist immediately for further evaluation and treatment.

Follow-Up Appointments

Attend any follow-up appointments scheduled by your periodontist to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns or questions you may have.

By following these aftercare guidelines and staying in communication with your periodontist, you can help ensure a smooth recovery and maintain the health of your gums and teeth following periodontal treatment.
Additionally, schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings to ensure your teeth’s health.

If you have any concerns or notice any changes with your teeth, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for guidance and assistance.
